Description:
The second Famicom Tantei Club game, whose subtitle translates to
"The Girl in Back", is actually a prequel, taking place two years prior and
telling the story of how the protagonist came under the wing of
Detective Utsugi. The hero’s first investigation tasks him with
uncovering the mystery of a murdered high school girl, during which he's
introduced to his future partner, Ayumi Tachibana. Connected to this is
another unsolved murder/kidnapping case from 15 years prior, along with
a ghost story of "the girl in back", featuring a blood-soaked girl that calls
students from behind. For the most part, the game is pretty similar to its
predecessor, though it redoes the interface to get rid of the grey bars.
Since you don't have amnesia in this game, the "remember" command is
replaced with a "think" command, though fundamentally they work the
same. The visuals and music are just as solid as before, and both the
high school setting and the ghost story give off a nice, spooky vibe.
Famicom Tantei Club Part II was remade for the Super Famicom and
distributed through the Nintendo Power cartridge writing system. This
version completely redoes the graphics and the music, in addition to
getting rid of the load times and disk-flipping. The FDS version also had
a brief 3D maze at the beginning of the second disk, which was removed
here. At the ending, there's also a personality assessment and a gauge
that measures your compatibility with Ayumi, based upon the actions
you took during the game. More importantly, this version has been fan
translated into English by Neo Demiforce and Clyde "Tomato" Mandelin,
making it the only Nintendo adventure game playable in English.
There was a third Famicom Tantei Club game, subtitled Yumi no
Kieta Kako ("The Past that Disappeared into Snow"), with Ayumi as the
protagonist, but this version was only released via the Satellaview, so
unfortunately it’s impossible to play it as it was originally intended.
